This isn’t an article with any new information that wasn’t covered yesterday, I just wanted to clear things up on a few points on the cameras that are coming next.
It looks like the next three EOS R cameras from Canon will be the EOS R8 V, EOS R8 Mark II and EOS R7 Mark II. I do believe that all three cameras are going to get announced on their own, possibly alongside some lenses.
The Canon EOS R8 V will be launched with the RF 20-50mm F4 IS STM PZ, which will most definitely be the kit lens and released at the same time as the RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ was with the EOS R50 V.
EOS R8 V
What we don’t know is what the EOS R8 V is going to be based on. The EOS R50 V shares the same sensor as the EOS R50 V and a lot of the same photo capabilities. The same stills framerates, number of autofocus points and those sorts of things.
There are some differences, example being the EOS R50 V has a lower resolution LCD monitor, but Canon has done that with recent models like the EOS R1. Lower resolution likely has a positive impact on battery life and video shooting tends to use up the battery faster than stills shooting.
I have only been told explicity that the EOS R8 V will come April 22, depending on your location in the world, and then we’ll see the EOS R8 Mark II afterwards. We don’t know the announcement date for the R8 Mark II, but my best guess is we’ll see it announced in May.
What I’m most eager to see is what the EOS R8 V will be based on. Will it be like the EOS R50 V and be similar in hardware and performance as the EOS R8 with a much different form factor, or will it be based on whatever the upgrades are going to be in the EOS R8 Mark II.
Canon released the EOS C50 ahead of the EOS R6 Mark III and Canon didn’t reveal detailed specifications about the EOS C50 until the EOS R6 Mark III was announced. They’re very similar cameras in a lot of aspects, from the image sensor to the photo capabilities.. Obviously the video side of things and form factor are completely different.
Latest Camera Certification
What’s interesting is that yesterday’s reported certification for a Canon camera with the model number DS126947 uses a Wi-fi 4 wireless module. That is the same Wi-Fi spec that is in the current EOS R8.
The EOS R50 is a Wi-Fi 4 camera, but the EOS R50 V is Wi-Fi 5. The EOS R7 is also a Wi-Fi 4 camera.
It would be very strange to see an APS-C V series camera getting a bump up and a full-frame R8 V staying the same. So I don’t think yesterday’s uncovered certification is for a full-frame V camera.
EOS R7 Mark II
Just because two other cameras are coming doesn’t mean that we’re not going to see the EOS R7 Mark II before June 16, 2026.
The running theme around the web is that we’re going to see the EOS R7 Mark II announced before mid-June, I have thought that it would be announced the last week of May or the first week of June. If you remember, the certification with the FCC has temporarily confidential reports that expire on Jume 16, 2026. The expiration dates are always after the product is announced.
We’re going with it being the EOS R7 Mark II because it uses the LP-E6P battery. The EOS R7 uses the the E6 battery as well. The R8 uses the smaller LP-E17. The smaller battery played a role in the small size of the R8.
Of course it’s possible that Canon could change what bettery the 8 series uses They may have shrunk or removed some things inside the camera to keep the size similar and still fit the bigger battery.
EOS R8 V and EOS R8 Mark II
We expect the R8 Mark II will use the same sensor as the EOS R6 Mark III and EOS C50. The R6 Mark II and R8 shared a sensor. There’s really no need to add 5th full frame sensor to the line-up, as there are already four of them (C80/C400, R1, R5 Mark II, (R6 Mark III/C50). I didn’t count the sensor in the EOS RP.
If Canon doesn’t release full specifications with the EOS R8 V and it is equipped with Canon’s latest full-frame sensor, then that will tell us that a related camera is coming relatively soon after, hence the EOS R8 Mark II.
In Closing
So to recap, EOS R8 V, and then the EOS R8 Mark II and then we all assume that it will be the EOS R7 Mark II in the headlines.
Hopefully that cleared up a few things about what is know, what isn’t and what is widely speculated in regards to the R7 Mark II. We have never explicitly said that we know when the R7 Mark II in coming, everyone in the rumor world is assuming the FCC certification already talked about is this post is the R7 successor.
Hopefully Wednesday will give us some hints about the R8 Mark II, or we could just have some fun with the R8 V and enjoy some content shooters have already made with it.
