  • Tudor celebrates 100 years with an entirely new design: the Tudor Monarch.
  • It features an integrated design, with a faceted case and “faceted two-link” bracelet w/ T-fit clasp.
  • Dark champagne brushed dial, traditionally-finished 65-hour Master Chronometer manufacture calibre, US$5,875.

When it comes to the Wilsdorf group, it is not all too often that you can genuinely say you have an entirely new design. However, to mark the 100-year anniversary of Tudor, the fan-favourite brand has aptly introduced an entirely new model line for its major milestone: the Tudor Monarch.

The Tudor Monarch case has a highly faceted form, far more sharp and angular than Tudor designs typically are, but certainly a shape and style popular amongst the broader marketplace. The 100-meter water-resistant stainless steel case measures 39mm in diameter, 11.9mm thick, and 46.2mm lug-to-lug, on paper the watch appears to have favourable dimensions for both smaller and larger wrists.

Its dial has a nice tone that will have the watch community debating salmon, copper, or otherwise. But the official nomenclature for the dial is “dark champagne-colour.” Whatever you want to call it, its hue and vertically-brushed finish look tasty. I also like the snowflake twist on a Breguet hand style, bringing classic design sense to the dial – but in a distinctly Tudor fashion. However, the California dial layout, with its mix of blackened and applied Arabic and Roman numerals, may be a bit contentious.

Integrated into the case is a new faceted two-link bracelet from Tudor. The brushed H-shaped link pieces feel quite familiar, but the mirror-polished centre-link pieces are quite literally a twist on a familiar format. Looking at the link-piece head on, you will see two slopes from a middle peak, almost like a pyramid bar. Whereas most bracelets of this style would have a gold bar shape, it’s almost like Tudor has twisted the middle link to bring the edge to the centre. Lastly, to ensure a great fit, Tudor has included its micro-adjust T-fit clasp.

Inside is a Master Chronometer certified MT5662-2U manufacture calibre. It’s a 65-hour automatic calibre, with a silicon balance spring and COSC and METAS certification that allows it to be called a Master Chronometer – increasingly more common in Tudor’s catalogue. Look closer through the exhibition caseback, and you’ll notice that Tudor has opted to bring a more traditional finish sensibility to the movement, with a Côtes de Genève decoration, along with thin bevels, performed on the bridges.

As a Land-Dweller owner, I have to say that this new Tudor Monarch feels like it takes a similar role within the brand’s catalogue. The Monarch is a more elevated, integrated design than what we have previously seen from the brand. You can see hints of a 1908 sensibility merged with a more faceted Land-Dweller-like sense of design. And the sum of all these parts looks great in my opinion. Great dimension set, an attractive brushed champagne dial with small seconds to feel even more classic, a two-link T-fit bracelet, and a Master Chronometer calibre with heightened finishing for Tudor.

To be honest, I am curious to see how the Royal will fare if the Monarch collection grows. Though it is important to note that the Monarch is priced at US$5,875, which equates to US$2,200 more than its equivalent Royal. My ultimate two-watch Tudor collection now? Give me this new Monarch and a Black Bay 54, and I’ll be all set.
